The Flaw

As I entered my house, vodka in hand, a fist came out of nowhere and connected with my stomach. I doubled over in pain, the bottle slipping from my hand; Scorsese, with astonishingly quick reflexes, caught the bottle before it hit the ground. He set it aside and pulled me upright by my ear and, as I struggled to breathe through the pain, hauled me across the flat to the couch and then vanished into the kitchen. Bill was sitting in my armchair, the floor around his feet littered with peanut shells. I was starting to think I should invest in deadbolts.

“You don’t listen very well, Mr Bellamy,” he said, popping another peanut into his mouth. “I thought we agreed you weren’t going to talk to your sweetheart or Neville about our little adventure.”

I stared at a crease in the leg of his trousers, unwilling to meet his eyes. “I figured I’d never see you guys again,” I said. “Figured you were a bad dream, or a really bizarre plot twist.”

“You keep thinking in terms of fiction,” he said, a note of amusement in his voice. “Let’s talk real business now,” he said. “Here’s what we’re going to do. As a show of good faith, I’m going to give you some more information, and trust that you’re not going to make the same mistakes you did the last time.”

‘I can’t make any promises,’ I thought, but didn’t say so out loud. I didn’t have much leverage, and decided to listen. “Go on,” I said. It wasn’t like I had much of a choice.

“So here’s the way I see it” Bill said. “You’re currently hunting a man who may have a big secret, and you’re on the right track.” He leaned back in the armchair and crossed one leg over the other. “By the way, I caught an airing of The Baker Street Sleuth last night.”

Forgetting myself momentarily, I asked eagerly, “What did you think of it?”

He gave me a look that said I was trying his patience, and then said, “I found it more entertaining than expected, actually.” He paused before adding, “The reason I bring it up is because it was an episode where Holmes has to track down an incriminatory letter.”

“A Scandal in Bohemia,” I said. “Classic Holmes.”

He made a noncommittal noise. “That episode got me thinking,” he said. “About how smart our guy can be.” “He’s no real life Sherlock Holmes, I can tell you that.”

He waved a hand dismissively. “I know that. I’m talking about this invisible villain we’re going after. You see, just like Irene Adler, this enemy of ours has a secret that he wants to spread. He’d just have to find a way to spread it. And the best way to do it is being on national television.” “And what kind of secret are we talking about?” I said.

“It’s a code. A few words uttered at the right moment and in the right way. It wouldn’t mean much for the general public, but there are some people who could use it.
